Tea & Turmeric Latte

Tea & Turmeric Latte

First of all, I am obsessed with the name I just titled this drink (there’s a lot more in there than tea and turmeric, by the way.)  I’m thinking a future YouTube channel where I chat with all my healthy friends about food trends?

But I digress.

Why You Need to Eat Fat

Why You Need to Eat Fat

I said it. You need to eat fat! The media has finally caught up to the science which has been trickling in over the past few years that busts the myth that fat makes you fat.  It doesn’t.  In fact, eating more fat is likely to help you lean out.  Healthy fat, that is.  Trans fats are still bad.  Very bad.  Trans fats are the processed, solidified oils that will have the word “hydrogenated” on the ingredient label.  Margarine and fake buttery spreads fall into this category.  Avoid these.  They are definitely implicated in cardiovascular diseases, high triglycerides and artery clogging problems.  But the other categories of fats are OK, even saturated ones.

Fats are great because they actually help us feel satisfied.

Moroccan Chicken and Rice

Moroccan Chicken and Rice

There was a small Moroccan restaurant in the East Village of New York City that my husband and I went to several times before he was actually my husband.  It is the only Moroccan restaurant I have ever eaten in to this day, but I have never forgotten the deliciousness of the famous “tagine.” (tuhJEEN).

A tagine is a small clay pot used to cook these flavorful dishes, which I do not have.  However, you can create the smells and aromas of the famed north African cuisine with a few easy to stock pantry staples.  Dried fruit, nuts, cinnamon, and honey are a good base.

Paleo Cauliflower Wraps

The other day I got my 3 year old to eat cauliflower for breakfast without knowing it.  Sure, I put butter (grass-fed) and jelly (organic) on it, but he ate cauliflower.  For breakfast. And he didn’t know it.

I enjoyed mine with avocado, smokey kale kraut, eggs and hot sauce.

How did I do such a thing?  I magically turned the cauliflower into round, flat patties, sort of like a cross between a pancake and a tortilla.  You could probably use these for tortillas if you wanted.  Or a small round sandwich.

Here’s what I used:

  • 1 head of organic cauliflower, florets only
  • 1 tbsp coconut flour (optional)
  • 1/2 tsp psyllium husk powder (optional)
  • 2 large eggs
  • a few shakes of salt

Here’s what I did.

Firecracker Noodles (Caitlin Style)

Tonight, we were supposed to have leftover chili.  But we had an impromptu trip to our local gourmet hot dog restaurant last night.  Thank you Franktuary!  While I didn’t have a grass-fed hot dog this time, I did devour their kale miso salad with local pastured kielbasa.  It was delicious.  I also had a decent amount of other protein sources today, and I could tell my body has met its protein quota in the last 24 hours.  It’s good to listen to your body.  It’s an art that takes practice, but it is your greatest tool in figuring out how to eat the best for you.

So in true Caitlin style, it was 4:30, and I quickly thought about what I really did want.  Vegetables and noodles.
